After more than a week of rumor surrounding who Seton Hall University would hire as its men's basketball coach, the position seems to be filled ' and not by Ohio men's basketball coach Tim O'Shea.
Former Manhattan coach Bobby Gonzalez is going to be announced as the coach of the Pirates today in a press conference, according to ESPN.com's Andy Katz. This comes just days after O'Shea was reported to be the prime target for the Pirates in a story in the New York Daily News.
Katz's ESPN.com report included a confirmation by a Seton Hall spokesman.
I never really put that much energy into this position
I mean you don't really apply for jobs like this in the coaching business they contact you O'Shea said. Bobby was the man they were really interested in anyways.
O'Shea, who will be returning to Athens today with assistant coach John Rhodes from a recruiting trip in Tampa, Fla., said that he wasn't contacted for a tour of the campus.
There was never any second or third interview like what was reported
O'Shea said. It was just something the New York media got a hold of and took off with.
With an overall record of 83-69 after five years in Athens, O'Shea said that being contacted for other jobs is nothing new in the world of coaching college basketball. He said that it shows his team's progress.
I've been contacted every year at Ohio
but it just never got this out of hand before
O'Shea said. I like the job I have at Ohio
and I think having people contacting me is a testament to the respect our program is gaining and the work of our coaching staff.
O'Shea and company already have two scholarship spots filled for next season and he was looking at a junior college prospect in Tampa for a few days before returning to Athens today to deal with some visiting students.
