Three young kids asked Adam Gecewich for his autograph after Ohio's game last night. The junior right fielder had that kind of performance.
Gecewich had three hits, including a three-run home run and narrowly missed hitting for the cycle as the Bobcats (4-22) pounded Marshall (11-16) 15-5 last night in Bob Wren Stadium.
The Bobcats turned the tables on their opponents. After falling behind by large amounts in the early innings of almost every one of their losses last week, the Bobcats jumped on Marshall from the start last night.
Shortstop Wesley O'Neill hit a leadoff home run that sparked a seven-run first for the Bobcats. The first six batters reached base before Marshall pitcher Ryan Kiel recorded an out.
The Bobcats sent 11 batters to the plate and Gecewich's first home run of the season capped the scoring in the frame.
(O'Neill) started off the game with the home run and it just carried through the lineup
Gecewich said. I was feeling some of the positivity and it ended up being a good day.
After adding a single and triple in his next two at bats, Gecewich needed just a double for the cycle. But he grounded out in the sixth and struck out swinging in the eighth.
It was in the back of everybody's heads said first baseman Jerod Yakubik. I was hoping for it
but he had a great night - he had an incredible night.
Ohio's pitchers shut down the Thundering Herd for most of the night. The trio of Brent Choban, Michael Dillon and Matt Robin gave up five runs - only four earned -- and struck out eight batters while yielding just one walk.
Designated hitter Victor Gomez put the Thundering Herd on the board in the fourth inning with a two-run home run - his eighth of the season - to make it 7-2.
But Ohio continued its attack. The Bobcats tallied 18 hits and scored runs in five of their eight attempts at bat. Seth Streich's solo home run in the eighth inning ended the scoring.
This is what we're very capable of
said coach Joe Carbone. But just because we're capable for it
doesn't mean it will happen again.
(We got to) get on the field and practice and get ready for Western Michigan, and try to do what we did tonight all over again.
