Bobcats face Falcons in final series of season

Joe Carbone isn't sure who will get Ohio's final start of the season come Saturday's game against Bowling Green.

Since the loss of starters Zeke Isaacs and Matt Smith to injuries a few weeks ago, the Bobcats have shuffled who makes the final start in Mid-American Conference series.

It's tough to lose two pitchers in your starting rotation ' everyone had a role and then everyone's role changes

Carbone said. The third starter has now been our relief guys that we're running out there and they've all thrown better in relief than as starters.

Right-hander Andrew Shisila is one option to get the final start of the series at Bowling Green Saturday. This past Sunday, Shisila churned out a career-long 6 and 2/3 innings of work in which he shut out Miami, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out three.

But he's never pitched that long before, and earlier this week, Carbone wasn't sure if he'd be ready for another, theoretically, extended outing.

He hasn't thrown that many pitches before and we'll just see how much he's recovered

Carbone said, noting that Shisila had surgery on his right shoulder while in high school.

Shisila said he was surprised at how his arm felt after his trip to the mound Sunday.

It actually feels good. I thought I'd be sorer than I am

he said. But it's up to coach. If he wants to pitch me

I'll be ready.

Shisila's only start this season ' of his 19 appearances ' came on April 29 against Kent State. He gave up four earned runs on two hits and walked two before he was pulled after 1/3 of an inning.

In three outings prior to that start (four innings total), Shisila had shutout performances in each, allowing only two hits combined.

Another possible starter for Saturday's game is Matt Schlarb, who Miami pummeled with 12 unearned runs off six hits through his 1 and 2/3 innings as a starter in last Sunday's 18-4 loss.

But preceding that outing was the sophomore's 5 and 2/3 inning start on May 8, when he limited Dayton to three runs on eight hits. Around the horn

After he threw a one-hit, complete game shutout last Friday to help the Bobcats defeat Miami 9-0, right-hander Chris Rigo was named MAC East Division Pitcher of the Week for the first time in his career. ... Right fielder Matt Stiffler needs only three more walks to tie Ohio's single season record (46). ... Willie Walker, Brandon Besl and Marc Krauss are all on hitting streaks heading into today's series opener against Bowling Green, having hit in 10, nine and eight straight games, respectively.
