From soul to psychedelic, The Union will showcase the energetic sounds of Thomas Function and Jail tomorrow night.
Thomas Function, hailing from Huntsville, Ala., is comprised of vocalist and guitarist Josh Macerno, bassist Travis Thompson, percussionist Philip Dougherty and pianist and organist Zachary Jeffries.
Reminiscent of rock and roll from the '60s, Thomas Function uses the sounds of an organ to provide a lethal spin on a classic sound.
(Our music) sounds like two muskrats in a little drum fighting ... with an organ
Macerno said.
On its return to Athens after playing at last year's Blackout Fest, the band just wants to provide a good time.
I want to be the bearer of fun Macerno said. I want to be the Santa Claus of fun.
The band is currently touring to promote its full-length LP Celebration! Slated to make a pit stop at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, the band will then go on a month-long European tour, which begins in late March.
Jail-which hails from Milwaukee, Wis.- makes its emergence to the Athens music scene during its tour to promote their first full-length LP There is No Sky.
With guitarist and lead vocalist Vinnie Kircher, bassist Andy Harris and percussionist Austin Dutmer, the band sounds similar to The Beatles. The band provides a beat- and rhythm-oriented music with catchy melodies and elements of throwback, Kircher said.
We're influenced by older music Kircher said. We've been listening to a lot of Harry Nelson lately
probably too much.
Though it is the band's first visit to Athens, it isn't their first time playing with
Thomas Function.
We like to play with Thomas Function and we just always happen to cross paths while touring
Kircher said.
Thomas Function and Jail will play tomorrow night at The Union with local openers We March and Arthur Killroad.
