Student Senate honors retiring advisor; plans for next quarter

Ohio University Student Senate recognized Michael Sostarich, senate advisor for more than 20 years, and awarded him the Bobcat Medal for his dedication and significant contributions to OU in last night's meeting, his last before retirement.

I wanted to take this opportunity to recognize the 25 years you've spent advising Student Senate

as well as the 26 years you've spent serving the Ohio University community said Ken Prabucki, residence life senator, adding Sostarich has earned his retirement after unparalleled commitment and dedication to OU students.

Senators also outlined plans for Winter Quarter when Student Senate will next convene, including addressing continued concerns over Tier III courses, an outreach program to OU branch campus senates and the sale of Stroud's Run State Park to the city of Athens.

Ohio's Men's Crew Team began to clear property they use at Stroud's, a move Tim Vonville, city and county affairs senator, said shouldn't have been made without more information on jurisdiction from the city and the state.

Vonville expressed concern that other OU departments linked to the park might not be permitted to use the property.

Senate President Brian Footer said he plans to use Winter Intercession to plan a Tier III agenda.

I was going to take the winter break to gather my thoughts on how I want to approach this Footer said after the meeting. He hopes to work with Phyllis Bernt, Faculty Senate chair, and introduce a Tier III campaign plan with Patrick Heery, academic affairs senator, during Winter Quarter session, he said. Ben Frech, state and federal affairs senator, and Dominic Barbato, senator for off-campus living, said they hope to meet with representatives from OU Zanesville and OU Chillicothe student senates next quarter in an effort to improve communication and increase the voice of the student body.

What we're trying to do is either get in touch with any student organizations that are representative in nature in the branch campuses

or if there aren't any

to try to create some student organizations there

Barbato said, adding that he hoped effort would also include placement on university committees and make a stronger student representative body.
