The Ohio Attorney General's office, which is representing Ohio University, has asked a state court to dismiss a professor's defamation lawsuit.
Jay Gunasekera is suing Ohio University in the Ohio Court of Common Pleas for defamation. He alleges that the university improperly disclosed his name in a report about incidences of plagiarism in master theses and dissertations in the mechanical engineering department of the Russ College of Engineering and Technology.
The Bloemer-Meyer report released last May accused Gunasekera of allowing rampant and flagrant plagiarism. Since the report was released, Gunasekera has stepped down as chair of the mechanical engineering department, been barred from advising graduate students for three years and has been referred to the college ethics committee.
In papers filed with the court on February 23, the attorney general alleges that the university has not defamed Gunasekera and the suit should be dismissed.
This is boiler plate stuff G? I don't think this motion will be granted
said John Marshall, attorney for Jay Gunasekera. 17
