The security aide program will remain on campus for the 2007-08 academic year, despite a proposal from Residence Life to eliminate the program if budgets were reduced by 5 percent.
We were asked to consider budget reduction; it was an exercise
said Judy Piercy, director of Residence Life. If we had to scale back or modify what would we do?
The department of Residence Life proposed reducing the program's budget by 25 percent if they were to take a 3 percent budget reduction, and eliminating the program if they were to take a 5 percent cut, at the Student General Fee Advisory Committee's student affairs budget hearing.Residence Life has been asked to take a budget reduction, but an exact amount has not been decided on, and the program will not be eliminated.
With a budget reduction, departments have to evaluate the importance of programs, said Mike Hess, interim assistant director for Residence Life and head of the Security Aide program. You don't want to not do things he said. You've got to produce a document that offers it.
Twenty security aides patrol the campus from 8:45 p.m. to 3 a.m. Thursday through Saturday to provide additional security for students.Security aides also have an in-hall commitment where they assist an assigned residence hall with programming for an additional 5-6 hours per week, and attend one hour in-hall staff meetings every week. Residence Life has been in discussion with security aides about ways to reduce the programs budget, and may eliminate the in-hall commitment, along with limiting the number of hours a Security aide is able to work.
We've talked about capping hours
but for a lot of us this is our only source of income
said Krystal LaFontaine, a security aide. We've kind of not liked that idea
but I think that might end up being what happens.
Security aides suggested eliminating the in-hall commitment because many of them live off campus, making it hard to develop a relationship with the hall staff, and organize programming, said Chris Slusser, a security aide.
We've decided to limit our in-hall commitment because it's a hit or miss for a lot of S.A.s
he said. Sometimes you're really connected
it's like a family thing
but sometimes they don't connect to you.
