Props to Stephen Mette for recognizing the need for men to educate and mentor each other to respect women. (People need education
not weapons Feb. 15). However, I have to disagree with him that education is the key to stopping sexual assault. Of course education is important, but 80 percent of sexual assaults reported say that alcohol was a factor. I don't think that any amount of mentoring and education will take precedence when one is intoxicated. Although I personally feel safe at OU, the distressing reality is that sexual assault happens on this campus. I've chosen (and my dad has strongly encouraged) to carry items to protect myself if the situation were to arise. Ladies, I encourage you to do what you need to in order to be safe. Maybe, just maybe, it would be smarter to teach people to use safe and responsible drinking habits -maybe that's the solution. -Gabrielle Smith is a junior middle childhood education major.
