Boogie on the Bricks to conclude week-long beer festival

The third annual Athens Boogie on the Bricks will be held on the final day of Ohio Brew Week, Saturday, July 21.

Six bands are scheduled to play at the outdoor festival in uptown Athens. Court Street will shut down and be used for pedestrian traffic only. Set-up begins at 9 a.m., but the party does not start until 2 p.m., when the Athens Dixieland Jazz band begins their set.

Vendors will line the street to offer summer staple foods like burgers, barbeque pork, hotdogs and beer. Many of the brewers featured at Brew Week will be present to speak with attendees, and a sampling tent will be set up. Art vendors, local artisans, Habitat for Humanity and jewelry makers will fill some of the booths.

Power 105's High School Battle of the Bands winner, Midnight, will begin their show at 3 p.m. Other musical acts will include Swagg, NICKALOGIC Groove Project and The Bluerunners. The shows will culminate with Athens band The Royales, who have headlined the event every year.

Athens loves them'they're real crowd pleasers

said Ric Wasserman, owner of the Pigskin Sports Bar & Grill, and coordinator of the event.

The stage for all of the acts will set up in front of the Pigskin Sports Bar & Grill, 38 N Court St. Parking will be free at the Athens City Parking Garage.

A play area will be available for children. It will remain open until 7 p.m. and will contain an inflatable bouncy-house, a climbing wall, face painting and a water balloon toss.

The event's total budget is $16,000, a portion of which was from proceeds from last year's event. Other support comes from local companies and businesses.

Last year's Boogie on the Bricks was the first time people could legally consume alcohol on Court Street during the festival.

The event officially ends around 10:30 p.m., but will likely run a little later, Wasserman said. The bars will remain open until their usual times. Boogie on the Bricks is one of the best nights of the year for the local taverns Wasserman said.
