Your Turn: Lecture series gives students insight into economy, health

Students just don't get it. That is, students don't get the information they deserve about the economy, health and other important issues. How many students are worried about getting a job after graduation? How many students know about and are worried about the obesity crisis and how it affects and can affect their lives? This quarter the Academic Affairs Commission of Student Senate is hosting a series of lectures related to these topics. As an effort to reach out to the students of Ohio University and address the most compelling issues of the time, the Academic Affairs Commission has scheduled two discussions for the remainder of Winter Quarter.

The first, a discussion of the current economic state, bailout, and the hardships of finding a job after graduation in an unstable market, will take place at 7 p.m. on February 24. Student Senate will be hosting Dr. Richard Vedder, Dr. Christopher Martin, and Dr. Thomas Korvas. Dr. Vedder will be addressing the economic crisis, the fall of Wall Street, and why it really affects students. Dr. Martin will be speaking from a political standpoint about what students should be worrying about and economic self-preservation. Finally, Dr. Korvas will be informing students of the assistance offered in Career Services and what students can do to be proactive about finding a job after graduation.

The second lecture, to be held in March, will cover the obesity crisis that affects almost one-third of Americans. Speakers and dates to be announced.

Bailey Miles is a senior studying biology and a member of the Student Senate Academic Affairs Commission.
