Athens City schools are closed Thursday because of inclement weather from a snowstorm, according to the Athens City School District website.
At about 10 p.m. Wednesday, Athens Sheriff Pat Kelly placed a Level 1 snow emergency on the county due to “extreme cold and icy road conditions.” A level one is the least severe of the several levels and indicates icy roads and blowing snow.
“The communications center has advised me (that) we have had multiple accidents reported,” Kelly wrote in a Facebook post Wednesday night. “Please be careful if you must drive.”
Sheriff Kelly has since confirmed Athens County to be under a “NO snow level,” meaning the roads should be safe to drive on.
