Jedis and Gleeks take center stage during Geek Week

Confectionary concoctions, Star Wars trivia and student talent will take center stage this week — all with a nerdy twist.

“When I found out we were having Geek Week, I got really excited because of the events that are going on,” said Catherine Caldwell, UPC PR and Marketing executive. “It’s a really broad range of geeky events.”

The week kicks off Monday night with OU’s Got Talent, inspired by the fans of Glee, also known as “Gleeks.” Four of OU’s a capella groups will take the stage, including the Leading Tones, Title IX, New Chords on the Block and the Tempo Tantrums. The show will also include two solo performances, free popcorn and a raffle to win OU gear.

“I think in addition to the a capella invitation we have in May, this is a good chance to see the variety of talent we have on campus,” said Allison Woods, a member of Title IX and one of the solo performers.

Geek Week will continue on Tuesday with Star Wars Day. The day will feature people in Star Wars costumes, cutouts of the characters and trivia based on the franchise. Winners of the trivia game have the chance to take home prizes such as the films on BluRay, a Star Wars Motion Picture Visual Picture Book or a twisting lightsaber.

Free food consistent with the Star Wars theme will also be available throughout Star Wars day. The fare includes Ewok food, Jar Jar Links, Chewie Wookie Cookies, Yoda punch and Roast Bantha sandwiches.

“Star Wars day is the highlight event of the week,” said Bobby Burtt, UPC weeklong events coordinator. “My co-chair and I love having fun with Star Wars stuff and we were talking and figured that if we like it, there are probably other people who would like it too.”

Popular apps will come to life on Wednesday at the There’s an App for That event. Attendees will have the chance to experience life size apps and create an app craft.

Geek Week concludes Thursday with Candyology. The event, which is in collaboration with COSI, will connect science with dessert. Attendees will take part in experiments to create something sweet. There will be a flavored oxygen bar, dirt pudding, ice cream in a bag and attendees will confront the myth that combining Pop Rocks and soda causes an explosion.

Checking out UPC’s Geek Week events will give students the chance to mingle with people who appreciate their inner geek, Burtt said.

“It’s a great way to meet people who have similar interests as you,” he said. “And you can even make some unexpected friends.”
