Joe Shields

Shields named Graduate College dean

Executive Vice President and Provost Pam Benoit announced today that Joseph Shields will serve as the next dean of Ohio University's Graduate College and take on the title of vice president for research and creative activity.

Shields has been serving as interim dean this year while maintaining his role as a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Since joining Ohio University in 1996, he has served for six years as the chair of the physics and astronomy department.

“Stewardship of research, creative activity, and graduate education must be creative, pragmatic and highly responsive to the evolving needs of faculty and students,” Benoit said in a statement. “Joe has the ability to provide the type of leadership needed to ensure success in these critical areas of our mission.”

Shields will receive $176,000 annually, about $41,000 less than his predecessor  Rathrinda Bose, who made $217,150 a year.

Bose announced last year that he was leaving to become the vice chancellor for research and technology transfer at the University of Houston.

“I am excited by the prospect of working with our talented faculty, students and staff to further the university’s mission in the advancement of knowledge and culture,” Shields said in a statement.
