Albany man sentenced to 12 years in prison for bank robbery, other charges

An Albany man who pleaded guilty to five felony charges was sentenced to 12 years in prison at his sentencing hearing Thursday.

Jason A. Johnson, 30, pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated robbery, two counts of trafficking in heroin and one count of tampering with evidence as part of three separate cases in the Athens County Court of Common Pleas last week.

The robbery charges stem from two incidents when Johnson robbed the Citizen’s Bank in Nelsonville and Jewell’s Drive-Thru Carryout in Glouster at gunpoint. Johnson destroyed items related to the bank robbery by burning them, which earned him the tampering with evidence charge, according to a news release from the Athens County Prosecutor’s Office.

About $3,000 was stolen from the bank, and about $200 was stolen from the carryout store.

Timothy Orsborne and Anthony Carey, both of Glouster, were each charged with one count of aggravated robbery for helping Johnson in the carryout robbery. Both men pleaded not guilty to the charge, and their cases are still pending.

Judge Michael Ward sentenced Johnson to a mandatory six-year sentence for the gun specifications on this aggravated robbery charges and another six years for the other charges, according to the release.

Johnson is currently serving three years in a state prison for another case. His 12-year sentence will begin after he completes the three-year sentence.
