A team can get its heart broken a lot of times over a season. For Ohio, three of those times came over the weekend.
It sucks
said pitcher Michelle Sauter. It's just really tough for the team.
Ohio (1-7) dropped a 3-2 extra-inning tilt to UNC-Greensboro yesterday, giving up a walk-off two-run home run in the eighth inning. Trailing 1-0, the 'Cats rallied to tie the score in the seventh and took a 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth.
Coach Jill Matyuch said she shared Sauter's frustration.
It's discouraging she said. It's hard to get nine hits and not get more runs out of it.
Ohio's two contests Saturday came down to key mistakes that put the Bobcats on the losing side both times.
The 'Cats had just tied Morehead State in the sixth with an RBI double from catcher Marian Davis when they ran into trouble. Morehead State second baseman Melody Ross reached base on a two-out error that also allowed a run to score, putting the Eagles up for good.
Sauter, who was pitching at the time, said those types of plays can be hard to get over.
I can't think about it she said. As a team
we take things one play at a time. I just had to focus and get the next batter.
Ohio's luck didn't improve in the afternoon game against Campbell. After four scoreless innings, pitcher Candace Saucedo retired the first two batters in the fifth before giving up a three-run homer that pushed the Camels to a 3-0 victory.
Matyuch said the Ohio miscues weren't the only reason for the losses.
It takes the other team to capitalize on those mistakes
she said. Hats off to Campbell and Morehead. We just need to do a little more of (capitalizing off mistakes).
On Friday, the Bobcats were unable to get their bats going against a strong Kent State pitching staff. Ohio managed only three hits and struck out 11 times in an 8-1 loss. Matyuch said Kent State pitcher Brittney Robinson was too much to bear.
We went up against a really good pitcher who was on
she said. We just weren't able to adjust fast enough.
