The Action Committee will hold a concert tomorrow night at Brown Town, 35 Brown St., for Sam Dorsett, founder of punk record label Plan-It X.
Dorsett is a transgender woman and activist who helped found the label. Since 1994, Plan-It X has
released albums from notable punk bands Defiance, Ohio,
This Bike is a Pipe Bomb, Ghost Mice and Against Me!.
Some people might know of her from some of the Plan-It X bands
said Max Wheeler, a promoter working in the Athens DIY collective the Action Committee. She is such a wonderful person that people have written songs about her.
Dorsett was involved in an accident on an interstate bridge in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2008, resulting in a 50-foot fall and the breaking of two vertebra and both ankles along with spinal
cord injuries. Details about the accident are sparse, and some suspect it was a hate crime.
To help pay for extensive hospital bills, the label is accepting donations. Cindy Crabb, a personal friend of Dorsett and member of Sister Shuffle, set up a benefit concert. Crabb has published zines for the past twenty years, including Doris Zine, and has played in bands with connections to Planet-It X, Wheeler said.
She's really honest in her writing and there's only a few writers who can be so completely truthful with their readers he said.
On the bill are Athens punk bands FSU and Sister Shuffle, along with Panty Hearst from Columbus. Max Wheeler and the Action Committee helped promote the show.
I heard what happened to Sam from the Plan-It X Records Web site and immediately wanted to do something to help out
Wheeler said. Cindy is friends with a lot of these bands and put the show together
and I wanted the Action Committee to be a part of it.
