Last night, the brothers of Sigma Lambda Beta Fraternity. hosted their second annual Latino Comedy Jam that literally had people jumping out of their seats.
The fraternity received funding from the Senate Appropriations Commission in order to create a program that would provide a free show on campus displaying the lives of minorities in the form of stand-up comedy.
“We wanted to treat our community, so we decided to keep it as a free show,” Ian Velez, Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity Inc. programming chair said.
The show consisted of two famous comedians, Gina Brillion and Angelo Lozada. The pair have worked together many times before and have appeared on Showtime, HBO, Comedy Central, Comic View, Martin Lawrence’s First Amendment Comedy Tour, BET, MSNBC, and many others.
The group booked the duo through their agent, Jesse Perez.
“He books everything from flights, hotels, transportation, to meals,” Velez said.
The material from both jokesters was inspired and continued to knock the socks off the audience with an interactive and seemingly impromptu type of comedy.
“I would consider my style as relatable and I really like it to seem conversational,” Gina Brillion said.
Brillion and Angelo Lozada agreed that Athens is and adorable, cute, and beautiful college town.
The comedians. both minorities from New York City, could be considered symbols of hope for local up and comers.
“My best advice for aspiring comedians it just to get on stage as much as possible and don’t force it, just be yourself,” Brillion said.
The intimate event was a definite success and truly felt like a special treat as howls, squeals, and gasps for air from the abundance of laughter filled room 235 of Morton Hall. It is definitely something to be looking forward to for next year.
“We are very excited. A lot of hard work was put into making this happen tonight, and we are anxious to see if that hard work paid off,” Velez said.
The fraternity’s next event, a Latin Dance Extravaganza called Fiesta Latina, will be held at Jackie O’s October the 21st.
