Football: Various injuries plague Green and White Game

Solich said. We've had a few injuries

but not too many (this year).

It's an accumulation of those we've had last year.

The offensive line was hit particularly hard. ,Frank Solich has been trying to get the word out to anyone who will listen.

He's sent out letters to parents and even went to the marketing department to let people know this will not be an ordinary spring game.

Tomorrow's Green and White Game will be severely limited because of injuries

I've never had to adjust a spring practice, Solich said. We've had a few injuries, but not too many (this year).

It's an accumulation of those we've had last year.

The offensive line was hit particularly hard.

There are only six linemen that are cleared to fully participate in the game. Those six are: offensive tackles Chris Rodgers and George Batsakes, guard John Flowers and Vince Carlotta, center David White and walk-on J.D. Bales.

We've finished some seasons (this injured) offensive line coach Keven Lightner said. But in spring

we've never seen this.

Because there are not enough linemen to field a green and a white squad, the spring game will look much more like a normal practice.

The first 20 minutes will be filled with pre-practice warm-ups and individual work. The next 10 minutes will consist of 7-on-7 drills.

Then the team will switch on and off from live punt return and kick-off return drills to 12 repetitions of offense versus defense with a halftime session in between.

You are still going to be able to see all of our athletes

Solich said. (The fans) will be able to evaluate if that's what they want to do.

It still should be interesting.

Even the nice weather could affect the team.

The forecast for tomorrow's game is sunny and 88 degrees.

That kind of heat is going to hurt us, Solich said.

The players will also get something out of the game.

Theo Scott will get to play in front of a crowd for the first time since he injured his collarbone last September against Ohio State.

Scott has been battling with fellow senior Boo Jackson for the starting quarterback position. While nothing will be decided until the fall

he said there is still work that needs to be done.

I was anxious to get back on the field just because I've been out for so long, Scott said. Spring was a learning period for a lot of guys.

It's hard to get things down when you have a lot of guys not on the same page.

The quarterback battle is the position Solich singled out that should be fun to watch for fans.

And like many of the fans in attendance, the game will give Solich one more opportunity to evaluate his players.

I'm going to consider it another practice

Solich said. Spring ball is about evaluating talent and getting the backup players a lot of reps.

And with the all of the injuries, those backups should see plenty of playing time.
