The Ohio cross country teams are set to battle for state supremacy Friday at the All-Ohio Championship in Delaware, Ohio.
Fresh off an intense meet at Notre Dame, the women are looking to come out strong and give state powerhouses Ohio State and Toledo a tough race.
The women's team will be satisfied with nothing but a win, senior Andrea Maas said. (Winning the meet) would be really, really good, she said.
The course
at the Methodist Theological Seminary in Delaware is a notably hilly course and both teams will be looking to their experienced runners to lead the way.
Maas and junior Carime Reinhart are familiar with the course terrain and will pace the Ohio women's team.
We (practice) hills for the first four weeks of the season, so this is our last week of hills, Maas said. This week we're kind of tapering a little bit. We're not running as much; we're doing a little bit less just to help our legs on all the hills this weekend.
Reinhart and Maas finished third and 15th respectively in last year's Ohio Invitational
leading the women to a sixth-place finish.
Sophomores Rachael Beakas and Melissa Horner will also play key roles as Ohio tries to lock up the team victory at the meet.
On the men's side
senior Brian King is ready to lead the squad against the formidable teams of Ohio State
Kent State and Miami.
King
who set a personal record last week at Notre Dame and was named the Mid-American Conference runner of the week
is conscious of the difficult course and says it can slow times by as much as a minute.
Really this weekend we're running for place, not time, King said.
Aside from King
the rest of Ohio's top men's runners are freshmen and sophomores
and will need to adjust to the up-and-down course.
Sophomores Shamus Eaton and Todd Holbrook will work with freshmen Ridge Robinson and Brock Schwarz as the four try to secure good finishes for the team's top five placers.,",17,Archives,Justin Whelan,",",",",",","
