Democrats equally lacking tolerance

Lately many of the stories in the news revolve around the future of the Democratic Party. I can't lie -after I found out that George W. Bush had been re-elected, and the Republicans had gained even more seats on Capitol Hill, I celebrated for days. Tom Daschle losing his seat was just icing on the cake. Something else that gave me a boost was the fact that morality played a large role in the election. These moral values are the straw imperative to the process of breaking the Democratic Party's back.

On the list of moral values, two seem to be leading the pack when it comes to controversy. The two I am talking about are abortion and gay marriage. While abortions have always been controversial, the topic is getting pushed further into the spotlight by the recent ban on partial birth abortions and the possibility of new Supreme Court justices. Like abortion, gay marriage is also being forced onto center stage. This has happened not only because of a possible amendment, but also as a result of the gay community making it such a large story, especially in San Francisco.

In case you haven't guessed, I am a Republican. You can call me a conservative if you like. Unlike many Democrats who cringe at being called a liberal, I am proud to be a conservative. While I am describing myself, I must also admit to being one of those pesky Christians who apparently came out to vote in large numbers to oppress women and gays with our disgusting moral values. Well at least that's how we have been portrayed, and that is why the Democratic Party is losing its integrity.

The people of this country have proven that they are tired of standing back and being called intolerant of other beliefs and lifestyles. In my opinion, it is the liberals who are intolerant of my beliefs. Therefore, I thought I would write this letter to explain one Republican's point of view on these two issues. I hope it will help the Democrats rethink their stance. Remember, there is no harm in changing your mind -just look at John Kerry.

Apparently by being anti-abortion and voting for George W. Bush, I am forcing women to have unwanted children and ruining their lives. Actually what I want to see, aside from stopping the murder of unborn children, is people taking responsibility for their actions. Notice I said people -the last time I checked it took a man and a woman to make a baby. I hate the argument that making abortion illegal forces women to raise children on their own. If you are with a man who wouldn't help you raise a child, then don't have sex with him. It seems like a simple task to me, unless you have no self-control.

As for the second topic, I do not agree with homosexual relationships, and it is my belief that they are wrong. I don't want to embrace the members of the homosexual community. I also understand that other people have beliefs that differ from my own, and that is why I am tolerant of their lifestyle. By tolerant, I am stating that people should have equal opportunities no matter what their sexual preference is. The problem here is that I do not include gay marriage as one of those opportunities. The way I see it, marriage is already an equal privilege for everyone. A man can marry a woman and a woman can marry a man no matter what their sexual preference is. I know I am offending people by having these beliefs, but that is how I feel and I am tired of being called homophobic just because I don't support that lifestyle.

I know that some of you are thinking that I am being unfair to those with different opinions. However, I have been in the minority ever since I came to this campus. The 2004 election should have made it clear to everyone that this college campus does not reflect the real world. The Democratic Party may seem strong here, but unless it strays from the far left of the political spectrum, the party will continue to fade in the real world.
