A cash register was stolen from the Subway on East State Street after business hours Sunday, Athens police chief Richard Mayer said.
The amount of money in the register at the time of the burglary was not specified or recorded in police reports, Mayer said. The burglary took place after employees left Subway at 11:00 p.m., but police are unsure of the exact time, he said.
The burglary is currently under investigation, Mayer said, adding that the crime qualifies as a burglary because the building was broken into and threats of force against individuals were not used. A robbery occurs when force or the threat of force is used to coerce a victim to hand over money or possessions.
A Subway manager said the restaurant will continue to operate normally. Subway was open from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. the day after the burglary, but returned to normal operating hours yesterday.
