New communications director named

Ohio University Communications and Marketing will have a new executive director when it separates from University Advancement in July, OU President Roderick McDavis announced at a news conference yesterday.

Joseph Brennan, currently the executive director of marketing and university relations for the University of the Pacific in California, will start in his position at OU on July 1. The announcement concludes a four-month search that had 70 applicants and three finalists, McDavis said.

University Advancement encompasses Alumni Relations, Communications and Marketing, Development and the OU Foundation, but when Brennan becomes executive director, his office will be its own entity.

Brennan will be part of McDavis' senior administrative cabinet and will report directly to the president. His duties will include managing media relations, internal communications, Web site development and maintenance, and communications and marketing research.

He will make an annual salary of $150,000.

Brennan said he is looking forward to joining OU not only because of its superb reputation but also because it has established a strategic plan

a road map for the future a road map that includes Communications and Marketing.

He has been the executive director of marketing and university relations for the University of the Pacific since 2003 and was the executive director of public relations and marketing at the University of Toledo from 2000 to 2003.

One of Brennan's goals is to tell the stories of OU to a broader audience and better share a reputation for excellence that isn't as well known, he said, adding that the Internet and news media are key in the telling of these stories.

Brennan said he hopes to emphasize the academic reputation of OU's undergraduate and graduate students, and the university's research efforts, he said.
