Moms' Weekend seemed a little more relaxed this year with Athens Police Department making only 21 arrests, about average for a typical weekend, mostly for disorderly conduct and underage consumption.
Moms still flooded the bars, buying mixed drinks and pitchers of beer, but they seemed more reserved
said one Moms' Weekend visitor, Carmella Morabito.
Morabito, grandmother of freshman Mike Trefny, has been to five Moms' Weekends in the past with her son, and this year was her first with her grandson.
This year was the calmest year I've seen Morabito said.
Most students said they enjoyed the quality time they spent with their moms this weekend, participating in many different activities and taking advantage of university-planned events.
Patty Miller and her son, senior Joe Miller, spent the weekend hiking in Hocking Hills, playing golf and shopping. They hit Skipper's Bar & Grille for a couple of drinks, but Patty Miller emphasized that drinking in moderation is key.
I've seen some inebriated mothers and it's embarrassing. I wouldn't want to embarrass [Joe] like that
she said.
Some moms were coming back to Ohio University as alumnae, such as Amy Pruzan, mother of sophomore Beca Pruzan. It was the Pruzans' second Moms' Weekend together.
I always have a good time here. It brings back memories
Amy Pruzan said. I've seen a lot of cops driving around and a lot of plastered
irresponsible moms.
Other moms were first-time visitors, such as Beth Moyer, who visited her son, senior Zach Moyer. She was joined by her daughter Jess, a sophomore at Indiana University who also was visiting OU for the first time.
Beth Moyer played beer pong with her son and then took her kids to the bars.
I haven't done this in a long time. It reminds me of when I was in college. I don't think times have changed a lot
but I don't think I would have taken my mom to the bars when she visited
Beth Moyer said.
Senior Franco Pasquarelli's mother didn't join him at the bars, but it didn't stop him from having a good time. He noticed that Moms' Weekend was more relaxed, as well.
Moms' Weekend is different [than Dads' Weekend]. The quarter is winding down
and I think everyone is more laid back
Pasquarelli said.
