Cross Country: Mud leads to messy finishes

Ohio's performance at the All-Ohio Championships wasn't what coach Clay Calkins was looking for.

The men finished 7th out of 38 teams, and the women placed 8th in a field of 42. With less than four weeks until the Mid-American Championships, Ohio needs to do better, Calkins said.

I consider it an off day for both squads

he said. I don't think we lived up to our potential today.

The clock is ticking. There's not a lot of time left so hopefully (the men's and women's teams) can improve as the year goes on.

The Bobcats trudged through a muddy course that had been pelted with rain up until the race started.

Runners were at a virtual standstill at times for fear of slipping. The team is not satisfied with its performance despite the mud said sophomore Joey Cherico.

I feel like we could have done better, Cherico said. But with the conditions given to us, we handled it pretty well. ... We were a little upset over what place we came in overall.

Redshirt junior Chris Davis was first across the line for the men finishing 32nd overall with a time of 27:39.0. Sophomore Cory Irwin and freshman Noah Howkins were the team's second and third runners. They came in 38th and 47th with times of 27:42.3 and 27:53.9

respectively.

Senior Jenielle Hunt led the women and finished 25th overall with a time of 19:24.4. She's been the Bobcats' top runner in every race she's competed in this season. Sophomore Hannah Charbel was second on the team with a time of 19:55.1 and a 42nd-place finish. Sophomore Lauren Fett was third for Ohio

finishing 48th with a time of 20:00.2.

Ohio has a two-week break before the team heads to Indiana for Pre-Nationals. The

runners will not be resting on their laurels

though.

We have a lot of work to do, Calkins said. We can't be satisfied with that performance. As a team or as coaches, it wasn't a great day.",",2,Sports,",",",",",",","

Katherine Ballard and the rest of the Bobcats realized they needed to get a win this weekend.

Ohio got one Saturday against Central Michigan

winning 2-1. Ballard led the way for the Bobcats

firing seven of the team's twelve shots. She scored Ohio's only two goals.

(Ballard) was great, coach Neil Macmillan said. She dragged the ball really well from the corners and did a good job getting some past the keeper.

The first goal came off a corner early in the first half. Katelyn Shelley passed the ball to Ballard who pushed the ball past goalie Melinda Curran.

Central Michigan tied the score up late in the first half on a Paulina Lee goal.

It was all Bobcats after that. Ohio dominated the second half
