This, readers, is our last issue of 2009. Because we can't share our list closer to the holidays, here's what we hope to receive this Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Festivus and winter solstice season.
A vice president for Finance and Administration who values transparency
Ohio University needs an administrator in charge of finances who cares about input when determining the budget. With current VP Bill Decatur leaving in January, President Roderick McDavis has a great opportunity to start anew and better inform students about the decisions behind their tuition and fees. First and foremost, whomever McDavis picks should prove it by opening Budget Planning Council meetings to the public.
The Bobcats win a bowl game
We certainly hope that if OU is picked for a bowl game, the Bobcats have a strong showing on the national stage. It'd be a fitting cap to a surprising season.
No Christmas displays until after Thanksgiving
Far be it for us to try to stop Christmas' commercial takeover of November, but this would be a good start. Think globally and act locally. We're looking at you, fraternities, sororities and uptown shops.
Bobcat Lane finally connects to Richland Avenue
The Road to Nowhere in front of Baker Center has stayed frustratingly dormant. Mayor Paul Wiehl and Athens City Council proved for a year they could successfully throw their weight around by refusing to remove the curb blocking access to Richland. It's about time they end this standoff for everyone's sake.
Peace on Earth (or at least in the Athens County Democratic Party)
Our final gift request is the unlikeliest of all. We hope during this festive season that Ohio Democratic Chairman Chris Redfern, County Prosecutor C. David Warren and County Party Chairwoman Susan Gwinn find some common ground. We suggest an evening of caroling around the piano, sipping hot chocolate and donning a few ugly sweaters - or just acting like mature leaders of their party.
If we found all these gifts underneath the tree next month, it would be a great winter break. We hope to see you again come January.
