Joint patrol council chooses design for new cruiser

A design has been selected after a month of accepting design ideas for a joint-patrol cruiser between Athens City Police and Ohio University Police Department.

Ohio University Police Department typically replaces a cruiser every year. The cruiser that was selected for the joint patrol was a once-decommissioned cruiser that is being reused for the joint-patrol.

Joint patrols are something that is done not only during events like Halloween and Palmerfest, but during an average week as well, OUPD Chief Andrew Powers said.

“Right now, we run joint patrol Thursday, Friday and Saturday, so about 24 hours a week,” Powers said. “We do regular joint patrol that’s scheduled and planned … obviously our two departments work together for (things like) Palmer Fest and Halloween.”

The Joint-Police Advisory Council, along with Athens Mayor Paul Wiehl and OU President Roderick McDavis voted on the design earlier this month.
