By design, to err is human

How was your first week back?

Ours was a little hectic — so hectic that we missed an extra "T" in the word "activists."

In fact, the few errors we had last week were introduced by our design staff.

That's not to say we shouldn't have caught the errors. We (as in the copy editors) definitely failed to see the forest for the trees. But our designers often claim they aren't word people; they're visual people.

When they transfer text from our Microsoft Word documents, sometimes they mistype it, like in Wednesday's graphic attached to the Little Cities of Black Diamonds story. We had "Redfiled" instead of "Redfield".

Other times, they just spell names out phonetically, like in the same aforementioned graphic: "New Straightsville" instead of "New Straitsville".

If you didn't know how to spell New Straitsville, you'd probably make the same mistake, right? ... Right?

So that's why we copy editors are here: to make sure the words The Post's designers add to their beautiful graphics are actually words. And sometimes, even we think they're words.

And with a mostly freshman staff, they are often ignorant of the many small towns sprinkled throughout Ohio and still have underdeveloped "shenagin" instincts.
