Monday, the League of Women Voters held a town hall meeting in Athens to discuss the tax increase that will be on the May 6 ballot. The League of Women Voters say they held this event to help city members understand why city council approved the tax increase. The Athens County Auditor says they would not be implementing the tax increase if it wasn't truly needed, and this town hall meeting was beneficial for attendees to ask any and all questions they have. Athens residents will vote May 6 in the Primary Election on a new tax reform, Issue 3. If passed, the levy would increase income taxes by 0.3% per year in the City of Athens and would go into effect Jan. 1, 2026.
