Fabric and craft retailer Joann is working to close and liquidate every store by May after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Jan. 15. The company has been around for 80 years, starting from a single storefront in Cleveland, Ohio, and becoming the nation’s leader in sewing and fabrics. The Joann in Athens at 743 E. State St. does not have a determined closure date.

Along Columbus Road, houses an establishment where people of all ages can explore their imaginations and dive into educational topics, creative projects and new friendships.

It is no secret that the Ohio University campus (and Athens more broadly) is teeming with wildlife. Aside from the deer, squirrels and groundhogs associated with OU, other less common mammals such as beavers, bobcats and even black bears have also been observed in and around Athens County.

The first and third Sunday of every month, Friendly Paws Pet Supplies & Grooming hosts the Athens County Humane Society cats for adoption event. This is a great way for people to get to know the cat before adoption, and also have volunteers foster for the cats before adoption.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife is calling for the public’s help in finding and reporting bald eagle nests in Ohio until March 16.

Athens City Council will be looking a little different in the upcoming months. City Council is holding its election May 6 and three of the nine current members have decided not to run again. The seats for Ward 1, Ward 2 and council president will all be open for new faces or current members to take their place.
The Ohio Economic Development Association awarded the City of Athens the 2024 Gold Level Encouraging Environmental Excellence in Communities Award. The award recognizes an organization or local government’s commitment to environmental oversight and excellence.
Local pizza restaurant Avalanche Pizza distributed 600 pounds of food around Athens County Feb. 1 to help people experiencing food insecurity.
Saturday, February 15, the Athens County Humane Society fundraising committee hosted a Galantine's Day lunch to celebrate the women they work with and the impact they've made on the Athens community. All proceeds from the event benefited the Athens County Humane Society. The fundraising board says this is their first event like this and they were very pleased with the turnout.
