Nadje Noordhuis with Ohio University Jazz Faculty & Guests and Jazz Ensemble II 7:30 p.m. at ARTS/West, 132 W. State St. Accompanied by jazz faculty and students from Ohio University, Australian-born trumpeter Nadje Noordhuis will open the 2017 Athens Jazz Festival. Noordhuis, now based in Brooklyn, combines classical, jazz and world music styles to create a one-of-a-kind sound. Admission: free.

Mental illness can have a heavy connotation to it, but after multiple campaigns the stigma is starting to be broken. On Saturday at 9 p.m., the American Music Therapy Association for Students will host Strike Down the Stigma at Casa Nueva featuring performances by Wolfmen, Ben Leeson, Slim Magnificent and Caitlin Kraus.

Pascal Guyon is a three-time Grammy nominee. He is a French music producer who has found much success working with artists known for their big voices, such as Leona Lewis and Anthony Hamilton. He has also done work in the Latin, jazz and classical scenes. I wanted to hear insight from a seasoned producer with a diverse resume.

Most people can agree that 2016 has been a difficult year. The presidential election was arduous, regardless of your preferred candidate won. Don’t forget Brexit and the siege and subsequent fall of Aleppo. David Bowie, Prince, Arnold Palmer, Alan Rickman, Leonard Cohen and Carrie Fisher, amongst others, all died. And after a steady decline in popularity over the past 10 years or so, the VCR finally met its end in July.

All of the press I’ve seen on Elle King takes the angle of the unlikely pop star. She’s a clever songwriter and a talented vocalist, but she doesn’t have the modern society’s idea of an attractive look. By that, I mean she is not a size zero, two or four.
