The beginning of February brought in a new month, six more weeks of winter and a huge NBA trade. The Lakers conducted a three-team trade deal Feb. 1, trading a first-round pick in 2029 as well as Anthony Davis and Max Christie for Luka Dončić. The trade was a shock for NBA fans everywhere, as it happened in the middle of the night and was one of the strangest deals to date. The Dallas Mavericks made a massive mistake with this trade.

President Donald Trump was inaugurated Jan. 20 as the 47th president of the United States. For many Americans, this was a day of shared loss and national frustration. On Inauguration Day, climate change mitigation group Sunrise Movement Athens hosted a meeting to offer a healing space, organized by co-Presidents Maeve Fellerhoff and Celia Hawk.

On the fifth floor of Alden Library, visitors passing by the Mahn Center for Archives and Special Collections see three glass cases containing old pamphlets, colorful flyers for events long passed and outdated newspaper articles. The torn-up pieces of a poster have been meticulously arranged for viewing. These documents are a small part of the history of the LGBTQIA+ rights movement in Athens.

Gov. Mike DeWine signed House Bill 8, also known as the ‘Don’t Say Gay Bill, Jan. 8. HB 8, also known as the “Parents’ Bill of Rights,” into public schools across Ohio, requiring schools to disclose "sexual" content and students' sexual orientation to parents. The bill also mandates schools to allow religious release time during school hours.

Ohio Senate Bill 1 is a bill that “bans Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion courses, training, litmus tests, required statements, and spending for any DEI initiatives or programs with the same intent,” specifically in higher education. By banning DEI initiatives, university students in Ohio will lose access to a multitude of open and welcoming environments, course offerings and potentially scholarship money.

The Office of Health Promotion at Ohio University aims to provide students with resources for mental health, specifically through The Bandana Project. They have a team of peer educators to help support and empower students through their mental health journeys. The office also has many other resources for challenges such as violence prevention and alcohol and drug reduction.

In the early 2000s, it would have been rare to find more than a few desktop computers in a classroom. 20 years later, a classroom would seem incomplete without a crowd of students relying on personal laptops and multiple other devices to get through the school day. In more recent years, those laptops have become a means to use artificial intelligence in the classroom.
