Ohioans voted to legalize recreational marijuana last November, but it wasn’t until this August that dispensaries were allowed to sell the substance to recreational users. While it has been legal to possess and consume marijuana since 30 days after Issue 2’s passage, the Athens community has been preparing for the start of recreational sales throughout the summer.

A 2023 report by the Ohio University Office of Emergency Management compared criminal activity on campus and in surrounding communities from the past three years. While its findings show that 2021 had the highest overall crime rate, it also found that 2022 held the highest crime rate in 10 of the 20 categories studied.

On Tuesday, Aug. 27, sororities’ potential new members will meet for orientation to officially start Ohio University’s Panhellenic Recruitment. Four rounds will extend between the first two weeks of the school year, starting on Aug. 30 and ending with bid day on Sept. 8. Recruitment in fall 2023 had all events in one weekend, but this year the Panhellenic Council will return to the traditional two-week process to welcome record-breaking numbers.

An Athens City ordinance, which took effect on Jan. 1, prohibits local businesses within Athens City limits from providing single-use plastic bags. Businesses that violate the rule face a $150 fine.

Almost six years ago, Ohio University student Collin Wiant was a victim of hazing in the unofficial annex house of Sigma Pi, located at 45 Mill Street. Wiant’s family faced OU in a wrongful death lawsuit following his death. On August 1, 2024, a Court of Claims judge ruled that OU was not liable.

All journalism majors at OU must complete an internship to graduate. According to the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, internships must be at least 200 hours in the student’s field of study and pre-approved by the student’s adviser. Though the task may seem straightforward, there are many obstacles to completing the internship requirement, and not due to lack of effort.

Undergraduate research experience is optional for many graduate programs’ admissions. However, according to the University of California, “Quality undergraduate research experience strongly enhances your competitiveness for graduate school,” and increases the likelihood of admission. Furthermore, research experiences in undergraduate and graduate programs can lead to career opportunities later.

Beginning June 10, Ohio University’s campus will host 1st-12th graders excited to learn, thrive and create connections through Kids on Campus. Kids on Campus is an annual “rural community-university partnership” through the College of Health Sciences and Professions that allows local and underprivileged children to participate in various hands-on activities during the summer.
