Fabric and craft retailer Joann is working to close and liquidate every store by May after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Jan. 15. The company has been around for 80 years, starting from a single storefront in Cleveland, Ohio, and becoming the nation’s leader in sewing and fabrics. The Joann in Athens at 743 E. State St. does not have a determined closure date.

Last weekend didn’t go well for Ohio (6-16, 2-7 Mid-American Conference). The team went against the MAC’s worst offense in Toledo and came away with back-to-back losses to end the three-game series, including a 1-0 shutout loss.

Television producer Shonda Rhimes stepped down from her role as treasurer of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on Feb. 12. Ben Folds, artistic advisor of the National Symphony Orchestra housed in the center, also stepped down from his role.

As our clocks spring forward and our jackets collect in our closets, students grab their hammocks or picnic blankets and head outside. As of Friday, President Donald Trump has signed 89 executive orders throughout his second term to seal his policy agenda into practice. His first week in office, a dozen of these orders were issued to advance the deportation and detention of migrants. Of course, the president retains the right to issue executive orders as he sees fit. However, the movements the Trump administration has been making have been uninhibited to a degree uncharacteristic of U.S. presidents, breaking precedent and threatening immigrants throughout the country, even those who came here legally.

The Osteopathic Heritage Foundation announced Jan. 16 that it was giving Ohio University’s Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine a $70 million gift to expand scholarships and fund future research.

Although the idea of spring break for some includes sun, sand and a tan, some Ohio University students see the week off class as an opportunity. Students can choose to stay in the U.S. or study abroad through the programs OU offers. These week-long programs are good options for students who cannot commit to a long-term study away.

On Feb. 25, the “Call Her Daddy” podcast hosted by Alex Cooper released an interview with Monica Lewinsky, the former White House intern most known for her affair with former President Bill Clinton in the late 1990s. The scandal led to mass criticism of her sexuality, appearance and led to Clinton's impeachment.

Between the National Park Service and the United States Forest Service, about 4,400 full-time employees were fired on Valentine’s Day. Most of these employees were in probationary periods, being in their first or second years on the job. About 5,000 temporary and seasonal positions within the NPS alone were halted as well.
