Four Ohio swimmers traveled to Austin, Texas, to participate in the 2025 Toyota U.S. Open Championships this weekend. The Bobcats competed in six events, qualifying for finals in all six. It was a successful trip to the Lone Star State for Ohio, as it competed on the highest level against some elite schools.

Ten athletes from Ohio University’s swim and dive team were told they would not be returning for the 2025–26 season in brief, individual meetings held March 3. Each athlete was called to the Aquatic Center for a five to 10 minute conversation with Head Coach Mason Norman, who informed them they were no longer part of the team’s future roster.

Ohio sophomore Zita Szoke had a historic weekend, breaking Mid-American Conference records in Federal Way, Washington, at the NCAA Tournament. Following the NCAA Tournament’s close Saturday, Szoke was named an All-American, the first Ohio swimmer to be named among the nation’s best in 25 years.

Wednesday, the national early signing period opened, allowing high school student-athletes to sign their national letters of intent before the regular signing period. Across Ohio’s many teams, several key commitments were announced.

Last season was a success for Ohio (1-0, 1-0 Mid-American Conference), after finishing third in the MAC Championship with 583 total points and seeing its first NCAA qualifier in a decade with freshman Zita Szoke. With the 2023 season behind it, Ohio got off to a strong start in 2024 with a 227-73 win against Toledo (0-1, 0-1 MAC).

Ohio swimming and diving competed in the 2024 MAC Championships at the Ohio University Aquatic Center in Athens, Feb. 27 through March 2. The team finished 3 overall with two individual MAC Champions, Zita Szoke in the 200 Free and Casi DiBetta in both the 100 Yard Breast and the 200 Yard Breast. After all the fanfare and mayhem that occurred at the end of the weekend at the Mid-American Conference Swim and Dive Championships, Ohio could be found huddled in the hallway of the Ohio Aquatic Center. Coach Mason Norman addressed his team, some of whom were visibly emotional. The ending was not the storybook one with Ohio getting to hoist the trophy in its home pool, but still, it was an ending to be proud of. Ohio was able to secure its highest placement as a team at the MAC Championships since it was runner-up in 2013.

On the third day of competition, Ohio was able to string together a pair of first-place finishes out of the six events on the day. As the action continued, Akron widened its lead while Miami and Ohio tried to overtake one another as well as Akron. Nonetheless, Ohio saw a lot of strong performances in the six events on Day 3 as its quest for a Mid-American Conference title continues.

Ohio entered the second day of the Mid-American Conference championships, staring down a 10-point deficit to both Miami and Akron after two events on Day 1. Day 2 featured five events: the 500-yard freestyle, the 200-yard IM, the 50-yard freestyle, one-meter diving and the 400-yard medley relay.

For the last year, everything has led to this very moment for the Ohio Swim and Dive team. Hosting the Mid-American Conference Championships is a huge honor, but having a chance to win the conference title is something even more exciting. Ohio (7-0, 4-0 MAC) has ripped through its opponents this season, and the only thing that can truly punctate a season of dominance is a MAC Championship.

It’s been quite the year for Ohio sports already; during the fall season, the soccer program won its first Mid-American Conference Championship in its history and the football program picked up a Power-5 football win at home against Iowa State. The field hockey and volleyball teams also turned in MAC tournament-worthy seasons.
