As we enter a time of outrageous higher education costs, exacerbating student loan debt for recent graduates, and magnified income inequality between the top one percent and bottom 50 percent of Americans, unpaid internships need to be addressed before class and racial inequality is able to be fixed.

A decisive legal case is being hashed out in the nation’s capital this month after a breach in power between the legislative and executive branches of government unfolded. President Trump’s declaration of a national emergency at the southern border last week has caused quite a rift in Washington D.C. among lawmakers. So far this year, conservatives in the Republican Party have been pushing to secure funding through a bipartisan bill for President Trump’s southern border wall proposition. A bipartisan bill has not been reached and as a result, last Friday, President Trump declared a national emergency at the southern border citing, “a border security and humanitarian crisis that threatens core national security interests and constitutes a national emergency. The southern border is a major entry point for criminals, gang members, and illicit narcotics... Because of the gravity of the current emergency situation, it is necessary for the Armed Forces to provide additional support to address the crisis.” Ultimately, it is up to the president’s discretion, or their opinion, to decide if the nation is experiencing a national emergency.

The U.S.’ economic model of capitalism allows for the laws of supply and demand to set fair prices in industries, and vast competition keeps prices low and allows for efficient production. But as one looks closer into the depths and history of capitalism in the U.S., you might start to notice the disturbing trend that capitalism is a game with clear-cut winners and losers. The individuals that bear the loss of capitalism are not found overseas in foreign countries in trade organizations; they are citizens here on American soil. Since before the country was revolutionized, capitalistic rhetoric has been employed and embraced throughout American society.

As a child I remember learning about the stock market in pop culture with the portrayal of wall street cultural and lifestyles in certain films such as It’s A Wonderful Life and Boiler Room, and more recently in The Great Gatsby and The Wolf of Wall Street. The portrayal of the American Dream growing up was shown to me in a light that business opportunity in the United States was limitless. But are these doors to opportunity slowly disappearing before us? As we continue into this 20-year trend of shrinkage in our public markets, one question loom: Why?
