This past weekend, the Ohio Health Race For A Reason event took place. There were multiple different races you could pick to compete in, and competitors got to chose the place, or their "reason" they wanted their money to be donated to. Organizers of the race say this is the best turnout they've had since COVID, and they love seeing people be passionate about what they're doing.

Ally Ginder, a sophomore with celiac disease, said she can count the dining hall meals she feels comfortable eating on one hand. “When you have like four meals that you just rotate, I got kind of tired of that, so I would lose like 10 pounds in like a week and a half,” Ginder said. This documentary does a deep dive into Ohio University Culinary Services to find out what extent Ohio University accommodates for students with celiac disease on campus.

The Cherry Bombs, an all women's baseball team here at Ohio University, is truly making history as they are the only women's baseball team in Ohio. The team has been around for four season now, and the creator of the team says she came up with the idea because of her love for baseball and women's sports. A player says she joined the Cherry Bombs because she liked that it's breaking gender boundaries and stereotypes in the sports world.

Intramural sports at Ohio University are a great way for students to play sports they enjoy and meet people, while not being too competitive. Students say they also enjoy it because it gives them an outlet from classes and school work. To play, just gather a group of friends and sign your team up, or you can sign up as a free agent and be placed randomly on a team.

The struggle of housing insecurity has been an ongoing problem in the Appalachian region due to a lack of shelter and resources for those in need. To combat this issue, HAPCAP put together the Sunset Shelter Project, which is a community initiative to turn the Sunset Motel on Columbus Road into a temporary housing shelter. Many local organizations, Athens community members and Ohio University students came together to help make a difference with this project.

Vibrancy Theatre put on Booty Candy last week. Booty Candy explores the theme of growing up as a black and queer person in America. The show is known for its comedy, while still highlighting the complexities of identity in black culture. An actress in Booty Candy says she loves the play becuase it spreads the message that you can't separate being black and queer, and it should be celebrated.

Athens Beautification Month, held throughout April, is an annual event where anyone in Athens can volunteer to help clean up and beautify the city. They transitioned from beautification day to beautification month to ensure the projects that need extra attention have time to succeed. One of the major clean ups the community is working on is renovating the Sunset Motel into a homeless shelter for those in need. Throughout the rest of April, there are many different events you can get involved in to help out your community!

Last week, the 52nd Athens International Film and Video Festival took place at the Athena Cinema. Throughout the week there were many different international as well as local films shown. The director of the festival says it's so special becuase it's rare to see so many short films in one place at one time. An Athena employee says she really enjoys the festival because it adds to the artsy culture of Athens.

Monday, the League of Women Voters held a town hall meeting in Athens to discuss the tax increase that will be on the May 6 ballot. The League of Women Voters say they held this event to help city members understand why city council approved the tax increase. The Athens County Auditor says they would not be implementing the tax increase if it wasn't truly needed, and this town hall meeting was beneficial for attendees to ask any and all questions they have.

The Green Bandana Project is a nationwide initiative to reduce the stigma around mental health. If you get a green bandana, the program gives you a resource card for different places to seek help, and they ask you tie the green bandana to your backpack to show you have those resources in case someone else may need them. Advocates of this project say the main goal is to help students feel less alone in their mental health journey.

The last fests of the year were this weekend: Athens Fest and the iconic Palmer Fest. Famous rappers performed at parties on Friday and students flooded Palmer Street to celebrate the end of fest season Saturday. Dr. Eddith Dashiell is retiring after 33 years of impactful work in journalism. For the past five years she's been the Director of the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, and she was the first woman and African American to fill the role. Dr. D has inspired so many students over the years and she will continue to be an advocate of free speech and journalism.

Club Cycle is a free fitness class for students and taught by student instructors at Ping Recreation Center. Cyclists say this class is a very interactive and engaging way to get a workout in. Coach, Lexi Zupsansky says cycling is her passion and allows her live a healthier life. She motivates her cyclists and holds exciting themed classes full of energy.

The Black Alumni Reunion at Ohio University was put on hold due to recent changes in Ohio legislation with the passing of Senate Bill 1. This bill removes DEI programs from public institutions, meaning OU can not hold the reunion anymore. Regardless, alumni and students say they are still coming together in Athens from April 10-13 to celebrate each other, they will just not do it through the university. President of OU, Lori Stewart Gonzalez wrote she is thankful for the Planning Committee's willingness to reimagine this event.
