Thursday, hundreds of students protested against OU’s lack of communication about Senate Bill 1 and President Donald Trump’s executive order to ban diversity, equity and inclusion programs at public institutions. According to the “Dear Colleagues Letter,” written by Trump and the Department of Education, they said universities need to stop treating people differently based on one’s race. Students responded and said certain groups of people already start at a disadvantage, so they need additional resources to mitigate the gap.

Over the weekend, protestors gathered before the Tesla dealership at Easton Town Center in Columbus to protest against Elon Musk and his new DOGE policies. DOGE stands for Department of Government Efficiency and its purpose is to modernize governmental efficiency through spending cuts. Protestors are concerned this poses risks to American's data, health and safety rights, wages and essential services. Protestors say it's urgent for the younger generation to get involved in making a change.

On Friday the Athena Cinema put on 'Show Her The Money', a documentary highlighting female investors and entrepreneurs in the venture capital world. The film specifically addresses how women get less then 2% of venture capital funding, and it follows four successful entrepreneurs who turn their dreams into a reality. A student involved in Ohio Women in Business says this was a great networking opportunity to meet other women in the business field.

The Triota Honors Society and Academic Honors Society for women, gender and sexuality studies recently hosted a discussion about gender based violence, policy changes with SB 1 and the future of research funding. Triota says their group provides a space for discussion and social change among students. Dr. Holly Ningard came to speak about these challenges and says she worries funding will be taken away from key anti-violence initiatives.

OU professor in the Human Anatomy and Biological Sciences departments, Ian Klein, created a fitness class called 'Move Better, Do Better' almost two years ago. This program is more than just a workout, as it's a space for the Athens community to improve their well-being through guided exercises, designed to build strength, flexibility and balance. A member of the class says she loves it because it a low impact class with high reward.
Despite the class being free, Klein does accept donations from attendees to give back to various charities. He says they've raised about 2,000 dollars so far.

Ohio University's Esports team, founded in 2017 has over 400 members, all gathering for serious gaming. The Esports club offers opportunities for tournament play, broadcasting, event management and even professional opportunities. Students on the team say they've truly found their community through this club.

Ohio University's Putnam School of Dance presented the 2025 Winter Dance Concert over the weekend. Dance students explain how this showcase is one of the bigger showcases they perform during the year, where guest choreographers and faculty choreograph the pieces. The dancers say this show is very meaningful to them and spreads important messages.

Saturday, February 15, the Athens County Humane Society fundraising committee hosted a Galantine's Day lunch to celebrate the women they work with and the impact they've made on the Athens community. All proceeds from the event benefited the Athens County Humane Society. The fundraising board says this is their first event like this and they were very pleased with the turnout.

Athens native, Betsy Franjola, created the Hocking Hills Garment Center by repurposing an old church into a factory in Buchtel, Ohio. Franjola hopes to create meaningful jobs in the community, while also supplying local businesses with sustainable, quality clothing. HHGC also plans to launch their own in-house line, where they will oversee both sourcing and manufacturing. Over the past year, multiple small businesses in Athens have closed, leaving current business owners worried and community members disappointed. At a community forum about these closures, Mayor Patterson said to business owners, it's a matter of advertising your business to get customers in your door. He said it may be challenging, but that's how local economies work. Reporter, Kendall Timms heard from current business owners about their thoughts on the closures.

The Dairy Barn Arts Center holds many different art classes, one of them being the Create to Donate class. This free class is open for all ages and any skill level. The class makes personalized clay bowls to donate to different charities. The Dairy Barn says this is a wonderful opportunity to create, learn and give back.
