At any level of softball, having a reliable catcher is integral to success. After all, there is no other position on the field that can see everything directly. For Ohio, Emma Hoffner is the rock behind the dish. Her contributions in the doubleheader sweep against Northern Illinois cannot go underappreciated like the importance of a good catcher.

Ohio (8-17 overall, 4-9 Mid-American Conference) hosted Western Michigan (13-13 overall, 6-4 MAC) in a close battle in the first game of the series, which went into extra innings. After being swept by Ball State last series, Ohio is looking to turn things around this weekend against Western Michigan.

A little over a week ago, Ohio was in Muncie, Indiana, playing Ball State in Game 1 of a huge conference series. During that first game, Ohio blew a 6-2 lead in the eighth inning. That’s indicative of how the Bobcats' season has gone so far: not having enough to win games late. Ohio would proceed to give up 33 runs across three games during that series, leading to a sweep and falling to a 4-8 conference record.

Poor weather is ruining the vibe here at Ohio University. There have been numerous days where I’ve wanted to be outside and enjoy nature in Athens only to discover the frigid temperatures the second I step out of my dorm room. I’ve heard great things about the cherry blossoms at OU but have yet to experience them at their best. While this weather is expected in winter, the fact it is still occurring in spring makes it the worst season of the four.

Aug. 18, 2022, my parents and I sat at Casa Nueva and reminisced on the past 18 years of our lives together. They had just moved me into my freshman dorm and were about to leave me to my own devices for the first time. As I tried to find my way back to East Green, still misty-eyed from our goodbyes, I thought nothing would ever top the level of independence I was feeling. That is, until I shared similarly misty-eyed goodbyes with my parents before beginning my semester abroad. In the few weeks I’ve been studying in Germany, I’ve realized that I had no idea what real independence was until now.

For me, scheduling classes is the bane of my existence. The stress and the anticipation sometimes make me feel like I’m going crazy. As a commuter, that stress is doubled as I have so many other factors to consider when building the perfect schedule.
