Through recruiting, Ohio Softball head coach Jenna Hall has been able to bring in her type of players to help vault the program into the next generation of greatness. After a great stretch during the late 2010s, Ohio was in search of a new leader after Kenzie Roark retired following the 2022 season. Hall was brought in to return Ohio to the good times it saw under Jodi Hermanek and Roark.

Fresh off a rousing weekend series win over Western Michigan, Ohio (23-21, 11-8 MAC) will begin the lighter portion of its schedule to close the season. First on that list is Buffalo (15-25, 7-12 MAC). The two teams are coming to play on the heels of big series victories with Buffalo taking two of three from Northern Illinois over the weekend. Ohio is looking to reaffirm its spot in the MAC standings with two or three wins in the series with hopes of moving up in the six-team MAC Tournament field. Entering the weekend, Buffalo is two games back of the sixth place team, Kent State.

For the first half of the third game in its series against Western Michigan (23-19, 12-7 Mid-American Conference), Ohio (23-21, 11-8 MAC) appeared destined for a similar fate that it saw in game one of the doubleheader the day prior. While the incredible comeback efforts in game two gave the Bobcats a chance to come out of the series on top, they still had a hurdle to climb with a talented pitcher set against them in game three.

In one instant, one swing of the bat, all of the doubt and dread of losing another game turned to dust. Ohio (22-21, 10-8 Mid-American Conference) looked dead to rights numerous times during the second game of its doubleheader against Western Michigan (23-18, 12-6 MAC). However, an improbable win was made possible by nothing short of belief and confidence in getting the job done. Ohio’s electrifying win might not have done a whole lot for it in the standings, but it sent a jolt of energy through Ohio, faithful that it cannot be overlooked.

Ohio (21-20, 9-7 Mid-American Conference) will welcome Western Michigan (22-17, 11-5 MAC) to Athens for its most pivotal series of the season. The teams are currently both in position to make the six-team MAC Tournament, but Ohio will be looking to move up in the standings, as it currently sits in fifth place, but a strong weekend can vault it up closer to the top.

Ohio (22-20, 9-7 Mid-American Conference) began its most pivotal stretch to this point in the season as it prepared to play against two of the four teams ranked above them in the MAC. Against Toledo (20-17, 11-6 MAC), Ohio was able to manage a split by scraping by a late-inning rally in the second game. Splitting the pair of games against Toledo is big for Ohio as it can then keep pace in the standings.

A 1-6 start to Mid-American Conference play was far from what Ohio (20-18, 8-6 MAC) wanted. Quite frankly, that is probably the worst thing that could have happened. Teams talk all the time about playing with consistency and vigor throughout the season. As the calendar turned to March, Ohio embarked on a stretch that saw it go 5-13 in March. That number might look a little better considering the pair of wins Ohio picked up in the final two games of the month. So how does a team that looked dead in the water arrive at this point in the season with everything in front of it?

Ohio (20-18, 8-6 MAC) will look to pull a huge upset for the second straight season as it travels up the road to face in-state foe Ohio State (19-15, 2-7 Big Ten). Last season, Ohio won a thriller against Ohio State, 1-0 in extra innings. This year, Ohio will look to do the same as it attempts to continue its impressive play and add to its active seven-game win streak.

Calling games “must-win” is a rather cliche thing in the eyes of many coaches. For Ohio (20-18, 8-6 MAC), that phrase might not be how it felt entering this weekend against Northern Illinois (9-23, 3-9 Mid-American Conference). However, it certainly felt as though a trio of wins at home would do wonders for its long-term outlook this season. That was exactly what happened for Ohio this weekend: it swept Northern Illinois in convincing fashion and extended its winning streak to seven games with its 6-3 victory Sunday.

At any level of softball, having a reliable catcher is integral to success. After all, there is no other position on the field that can see everything directly. For Ohio, Emma Hoffner is the rock behind the dish. Her contributions in the doubleheader sweep against Northern Illinois cannot go underappreciated like the importance of a good catcher.

With a triumphant weekend in the rearview mirror, Ohio (17-18, 5-6 MAC) hit the road for a midweek doubleheader against in-state rival Kent State (18-12, 4-4 MAC). Ohio pulled out a pair of wins over Kent State, using some good pitching to shut down an offense that ranked toward the top of the conference entering the game.

After a 2-1 weekend against Central Michigan, Ohio (15-18, 3-6 MAC) will take its strong play on the road, just a few hours up the road against Kent State (18-10, 4-2 MAC). With the schedule turning to the second half of the conference slate, each win becomes more pivotal as the MAC Tournament nears. Ohio and Kent State met last season with Ohio taking two of the three games in Athens.

After the rain showers that paused the action in the top of the first inning cleared, it felt as though the metaphoric storm that had clouded Ohio’s offense subsided as well. With the score in an unfavorable spot for Ohio, a 2-1 deficit against Central Michigan’s Grace Lehto quickly turned into an Ohio lead as the team scored a combined 4 runs in the second and third innings, taking a lead that it would not lose. Ohio’s early offensive surge led to a 7-3 victory to earn a series win

The first ten innings of the doubleheader for Ohio (14-18, 2-6 Mid-American Conference) dragged on without much going on well for the home team at the plate. Facing Central Michigan (6-19, 3-2 MAC), it was not until a 3-run 4th inning in game two that saw it take its first lead of the day.

Coming off a historic performance at the NCAA Wrestling Championships, Peyten Kellar and the wrestling team came home to Athens with their heads held high.
(03/25/24 2:17am)
Peyten Kellar has been on one of the most dominant runs seen by an Ohio wrestler in years. However, he was not given the amount of national attention expected for the No. 7 seed in the NCAA Championships. Kellar became the first Ohio wrestler to become an All-American since Cody Walters, current Ohio assistant coach, did so in 2016. Throughout the weekend, Kellar went 6-2 and claimed 5th place.

Months of training, grueling matches and exhaustion all culminate in one weekend. While the majority of the country will set its focus on the beginning of March Madness, there is another national tournament happening in Kansas City, Missouri: the NCAA Wrestling Championships.

Entering its first series of Mid-American Conference play, Ohio was not exactly playing at its highest level. Ohio lost seven of its last eight games, including its home opener against Marshall earlier this week. The first two games of its series against Ball State, Ohio looked like the struggling team that limped its way into conference games. However, that all changed on Sunday as it turned to its ace, Skipp Miller, when it needed her most to deliver a clean, smooth complete game shutout to return Ohio to the win column.
