There are three classes of students who have not yet had a full normal year of college.
I am not a huge sports fan. I can tell you what a first down is, I know that in hockey they use a puck and I know that they use weird names for scoring in tennis. I don’t partake in a whole lot of sports entertainment, but baseball holds a special place in my heart – the Cleveland Indians baseball team specifically. I attended my first Indians game when I was three years old.
College is a lot different than high school. Here are some tips to get through it academically.
Monday was a big day for Ohio University. Gov. Mike DeWine visited OU for a press conference to promote vaccination efforts. During the press conference, he promoted the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which three students received during the event.
Two weeks to stop the spread.
Spring has sprung. The weather is getting nicer, the snow has long since melted, the grass is getting greener and most importantly, it is now nice enough to partake in outdoor activities.
We were all freshmen once, and it wasn’t very long ago. We remember the stress of trying to find something to do on the weekend, the fear of getting caught doing something we shouldn’t and the fear of missing out on new friends and unfamiliar fun. It helped us-- as upperclassmen-- grow up and become the people we are today. Any upperclassmen knows you can always tell who is a freshman and who isn’t. It’s not because you can physically tell their age, but it is the wide-eyed gaze and excitement about literally every part of the college experience.
TikTok trends and meme culture alike are constantly changing and developing. With thousands of TikTok videos made a day, trends can pop up out of nowhere and consume the whole platform for a week and then disappear as quickly as they popped up. Internet memes are the same way. One newfound TikTok trend that has also made itself a meme that seems to be here to stay is Ratatouille: The Musical, also known as Ratatusical.
Alex Trebek, longtime host of the game show “Jeopardy!,” passed away peacefully in his home Nov. 8, at age 80. Trebek was the host of “Jeopardy!” for 36 years. As the show’s host, Trebek was known for being sharp, quick-witted and a bit snarky when contestants got answers wrong that he deemed easy. It was this fun-loving and challenging attitude that made the show entertaining and made it oh-so tempting to play along from home.
Political platforms are confusing and often disingenuous. We broke down what they’re really going to do in office.
Voter suppression has a long and ugly history in this country. Many groups of people– particularly Black people, the elderly, students and people with disabilities– have faced voter suppression in elections. Voter suppression can occur in a few different ways. In the past laws have been enacted to suppress votes. Poll taxes have been put in place to add a financial hindrance to voting. Voter registration records have been purged to unregister people from voting. Some people even believe that the current process of registering to vote is itself an act of voter suppression in some states.
Everyone knows The Beatles. Whether you grew up listening to them through your older relatives, found them on your own or just know a few of their songs through pop culture, The Beatles are a band known by all, unless you live under a rock.
With the presidential election three weeks away, undecided voters are looking for any indication to pick one candidate over the other. As we witnessed a few weeks ago, the format of the presidential debate doesn’t really help these undecided voters out, as the debate format leads to constant interruptions and more arguing than actual debating for these particular candidates.
The Republican Party holds a super majority in the Ohio General Assembly. Here are some seats that may change.
The political discussion format of debate is almost old as politics itself. The first debates started as public speaking events in Ancient Greece: the greats like Aristotle and Plato used rhetoric to try and persuade people they were debating to agree with them. They were also trying to persuade people who were watching the debates as well.
We are living through a pandemic. These words used to hold weight and seemed scary but at this point they sound like a cliche. We’ve been riding out this pandemic for the past six months now. This seems to be the new way of life. If we ever want to get out of this quarantine nightmare, it is going to take the continuation of the hard work most people have been putting in: wearing masks, social distancing and getting tested when we have been exposed.
America has lost a cultural and feminist icon. Ruth Bader Ginsburg spent her whole life advocating for human and women’s rights, up until her last breath. As a country, we must mourn her death and try our best to not politicize this situation. If you have followed this situation closely, you will know politicians have already done just that, many are calling either for an appointment under Trump, or urging U.S. Congress to wait for the appointment until the next election.
If you are an avid TikTok user, you have probably, at this point, encountered a certain branch of TikTok. There is “Political TikTok,” “WitchTok,” “Alt TikTok,” “Straight TikTok,” and literally countless more. I often find myself scrolling for hours, and I will come across a video saying something along the lines of “Welcome to ____TikTok.” These videos are always related to something that interests me, without fail every time. Many people will makes jokes and videos about “the algorithm” and talk about it like it is not some hidden component to the app; the algorithm is spoken of like it is something we can see and something we have a say in.
It’s week three of the Fall Semester. Since upperclassmen have returned to Athens, COVID-19 cases have spiked. There are, as of Sept. 9, 53 active cases in Athens. This may not seem like a lot, but it becomes a lot when you have the virus and continue to go to bars and parties.
