The semester is winding down, and it’s time for the seniors at The Post to graduate next week. While The Post will still publish its annual photo issue next week, these seniors will all be moving on from their time with the publication.

Cue the sad music because this is my last From the Editor’s Desk column. I remember back to my freshman year reading Liz Backo’s—the then editor-in-chief—last editor’s desk column. She wrote how The Post is more than just an independent, student-run media outlet. If there’s anything I’ve learned over my last four years here, that sentiment is exorbitantly true.

iFor the last four years, Athens has been my home away from home. Whether it’s been my time at Ohio University, The Post, the places or the people, I’ve had some of the best times here and formed some great memories.

Though they were postponed a couple of months due to COVID-19, the 93rd Academy Awards are right around the corner and the race is on for the highest honor of the night.

Every year Post members and alumni meet up for the Post Alumni Reunion. After last year’s last-minute cancelation and even more last-minute planning of a reunion that compiled all of the day's events and more into an hour-long Zoom call, this year’s first official, full-fledged virtual Post alumni reunion showed that even through Zoom that the Post family is strong.

Live entertainment venues were the first to close, and will be the last to open back up during the COVID-19 pandemic.

It seems like just yesterday I was writing my first From the Editor’s Desk column, but now I only have a handful left. But while my end is in sight, that means it’s time for change. The Post is constantly changing and right now it’s beginning to move forward with new leadership.

As mid-March rolls around, the U.S. has reached its one-year anniversary of dealing with the turmoil caused by coronavirus. Over the course of that year, journalism has shifted and adapted heavily as COVID-19 has seeped itself into all aspects of coverage. Throughout Athens, multiple student and local news sources and publications have tirelessly covered the impact of COVID-19, and they all deserve a round of applause for their exhausting but essential work.

The root of all student publications is experiential learning. As students of not only the Scripps College of Communication but also every other college at Ohio University, there are plenty of student organizations, publications and clubs to join to grow as a person and in your career. For over 100 years, The Post has offered experiential learning for all OU students.

Respect your sports reporters, because you probably can’t do what they do.

Though it doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves, student journalism is real journalism. Students at high schools and colleges across the globe are covering the same issues as professional journalists at national and international levels despite not getting anywhere near the same level of praise and recognition.

As a journalism publication, The Post is constantly publishing articles, photos, videos and more, but the majority of the time, the process to getting those published goes unknown by our audience. Furthermore, with “fake news” as rampant as ever, journalism can be confusing to those who aren’t familiar with it.

Every February, love is in the air and candy hearts line the shelves of grocery stores. Though Valentine’s Day is a made-up holiday, after the past year, the world should look past all that and hold their loved ones close.

After a quick change to a virtual format last Spring Semester and a full load of virtual classes for most students this past fall, it seems that there’s a perception that online classes are easier for students and professors. Well, I can personally tell you this perception is false.

On paper, a crime drama with Denzel Washington, Rami Malek and Jared Leto screams good cinema — maybe even a possible attempt at awards season.

When journalism publications publish articles that spark praise, usually the writers get any and all notice. Nevertheless, there’s more people that work on a singular piece than one would maybe think. Give or take, the average story is touched or assisted by at least five people.

With students actually back on campus and syllabus week coming to close, Spring Semester is in full swing. Which also means that the countdown until the day I virtually graduate is ticking.
With a little over 14 weeks left of time as a college student, it feels only fitting to soak up everything Athens and Ohio University have to offer. I know even as an alum, I’ll always be a Bobcat, but I also know that these four years I’ve spent here have been special, and I should cherish my final days.

In a year that has caused such turmoil and heartache across the world, Taylor Swift has put all her efforts toward creativity and graced listeners with not one but two surprise albums. Following July’s release of Folklore, Swift has released its sister album, Evermore. Riddled with the same raw lyricism and folk sound as Folklore, Evermore further shows listeners that Swift is a domineering songwriter in today’s industry.

As week 15 of Fall Semester steadily comes to a close, finals are looming and the relaxation of Winter Break is on practically all Ohio University students’ minds.
