Oscar season is here. The majority of films that are vying for praise have already been released, and it may be a very competitive season for movie of the year. Something that has been present in the movie world are black and white films. Macbeth, Belfast, C’mon C’mon and even a whole segment of The French Dispatch. All of these films have certain aspects and qualities that make the black and white film aesthetic work. Each serves a different purpose and utilizes different aesthetics to create an effect. The concept of black and white film as an aesthetic might seem to be mainly visual, but the nuance they invoke is very much psychological. Each of these films present a different way of utilizing photography without color in a different way, so that it evokes different audience perceptions.

If you’ve watched the recent reunion film on HBO max, it’s no wonder why Harry Potter is back in conversation. The all together wonderful production brought teary eyes and warm hearts to display. Being able to see how much this movie franchise affected those involved in the making of these films was so endearing. But, just as much, if not more, this franchise has meant so much to the fans. A few weeks ago, HBO Max released a reunion film for the Harry Potter franchise. It’s been 20 years since the release of the first film in the series, something that might seem unbelievable. Nonetheless, it is very evident just how far so many of these actors have come since starring in this series which so many of us grew up watching.

On Nov. 5th, Portland rapper Aminé released his latest album, Two Point Five. A new wave R&B/hip-hop hybrid, this new album is a shift from the initial sound that brought him such notability. Some tracks on the project go back to his earlier rap sound, but those tracks have an alternative sound that focuses more on melodic choruses than being overly lyrical.

At the onset of the series, we are thrust into the story immediately; something that actually makes the series more interesting because no time is wasted for a build up.

“Nine Perfect Strangers”, a relatively new thriller series on HBO, aired it’s last episode on Sept. 22. The conclusion of the show has brought in a steady increase of viewers. Many have chosen to binge-watch the series rather than watching each episode as it was released, arguing this makes the viewing experience better. Nonetheless, “Nine Perfect Strangers” is a fun, jam-packed and emotional series full of wild turns.

The new film, Candyman left little to the imagination, probably a result of being produced and influenced by the mind of Jordan Peele, who brought us great films like Get Out and Us. This is a horror film, first and foremost, so we should always expect gore and terrifying displays of violence, but what was unexpected was the social commentary, which was something more profound and truthful.
