Resident Evil Biohazard, the seventh game in the Resident Evil series, echoed the earliest entries and brought the iconic horror franchise back to its roots. New protagonist, Ethan Winters, wandered around an eerie Louisiana mansion, where zombies lunged around corners and took magazines full of bullets to the face without flinching. It was a terrifying breath of fresh air from the superheroics the series had begun to veer into with Resident Evil 4. So, when the first information about Resident Evil Village came out, revealing a more action-oriented tone and a setting reminiscent of Resident Evil 4’s, some fans approached it with some trepidation.

The Stanley Parable released in 2013 and changed everything. It wasn’t the first game to interrogate the mechanical foundations on which it rested, but it was, at the time, arguably the best. The game was functionally a walking simulator in which the player, controlling a character named Stanley, navigated an office while a narrator explained his actions. The exciting part of the game came from the fact that the player could constantly act in opposition to the narrator.

I haven’t held my Nintendo Switch in a week. Aside from the scarce minutes I can steal away for Super Mario Maker 2 when my girlfriend is studying, the console has found a new home in her hands and a new purpose as a Fire Emblem: Three Houses machine. It finally happened: my girlfriend found a video game she loves.

Ghostwire: Tokyo is a fascinating game. The latest release from Tango Gameworks, a studio founded by Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami, veers wildly from Mikami’s horror roots to make way for an open-world experience touched by spooky ideas, though not entirely defined by them. In the process, the game strikes a truly unique tone, but it gets a bit lost in the bog standard open-world formula.

Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve heard one resounding sentiment from fans, critics, and basically all other players of games: “It’s only March and Elden Ring is already the best game of the year!” Unfortunately, that sentiment is incorrect. For as much as I love Elden Ring, it’s not the best game of the year. In fact, it’s not even the best game of the month. That honor belongs to Norco.

The Nintendo DS is still, 18 years after its triumphant release, the second best-selling console of all time. Everyone had a DS, which likely contributed to the lasting appeal of its most popular franchises.

I play video games. It’s what I do. I enjoy playing games nearly as much as I enjoy talking about them, and that means I spend a lot of time doing it. As big-budget games continue to grow, and as more of them vie for my attention, sometimes I think it would be best if they were all a little shorter - but some games need to be long.

Hidetaka Miyazaki’s considerable catalog has garnered a pretty ruthless reputation for its extravagantly high difficulty. The gaming auteur, who has been responsible for directing most of the studio FromSoftware’s most recognizable games since 2009’s Demon’s Souls, is known for including unfair traps, massive difficulty spikes, and unrelenting boss fights in his games. All of that is present in his newest title, Elden Ring, but somehow it all feels very… nice.

Dark Souls is such a widely discussed video game that even prefacing a piece about Dark Souls by talking about the breadth of discussion the game has inspired has become a bit of a cliche. It’s almost impossible to have an interest in video games without being at least familiar with Dark Souls, even if its notorious difficulty bars you from trying it yourself. But, more important than its difficulty and only slightly less legendary, is the game’s carefully crafted world.
