For those of you who don’t know, Invincible is an animated, adult superhero series that follows a high schooler named Mark Grayson as he adapts to his newfound powers and the world of superheroes around him. While that sounds cliche and familiar to any fans of the genre, the series and the comics it’s based on play with all the tropes and expectations of the genre to create something entirely new and fresh. This series is nothing like anything out there on TV right now.

Sam Wilson is Captain America. I’ve been waiting since Avengers: Endgame to say that. Other than that, “One World, One People” doesn’t have a lot to offer. Sure, there’s fun action from start to finish in the episode, and it’s great to see Sam in his new, sleek, comic-accurate suit, but everything else just falls apart when you think about it.

The writers of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier have been teasing for a week or so that episode five, titled “Truth,” was going to be a big episode with a big cameo. They mostly delivered on those teases but fell short on delivering the best episode of the series; that honor still belongs to the previous episode.

“The Whole World is Watching” far exceeded expectations. Going in, episode four of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier was expected to be a slow-paced episode that would take the time to set up the finale and penultimate episode. While it does those things, it’s masterful in its execution of them. Despite the lack of action, there was no shortage of boredom. The character moments and interactions had me enthralled until the credits rolled.

In episode two, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier series teased that John Walker would start going down a darker path; episode three begins with proof of that. He thinks that because of the shield he’s wielding and the costume he’s wearing, people will both fear and respect him. Neither is the case. He’s beginning to get desperate, and we can only assume that will lead him to seek out the super-soldier serum that the Flag Smashers possess.

Episode two, ”The Star Spangled Man,” starts with an introduction to the new Captain America, John Walker (Wyatt Russell). He seems like an actual decent human being with relatable problems, creating a dilemma for the viewer. Should you like him because he seems genuine or dislike him because he’s not the Captain America that you’ve gotten to know over the last decade of Marvel movies? This is something that’ll be developed over the next four episodes for sure.

With Phase Four now fully underway, Marvel trots out a series more in line tonally with its previous entries, most obviously Captain America: The Winter Soldier. A more grounded and serious plot is a bold change of pace following Wandavision, which ended just a few short weeks ago.

Invincible follows Mark Grayson, a high schooler whose father, Omni-Man, just happens to be the strongest superhero on Earth. When the story begins, Mark doesn’t have his powers yet, but that soon changes when he develops similar powers to his father. While this may sound exactly like every other superhero origin story, things soon take a dark and bloody turn that I will not dare spoil.

If you know nothing about the film, I recommend you go in as blind as possible, just know that Judas and the Black Messiah is a must-watch, whether at a theater or on HBO Max.

I find myself conflicted after watching this latest foray into the true crime genre from Netflix. On one hand, it’s an easily binge-able and engaging series about the detectives investigating and hunting for one of the most notorious American serial killers. On the other, it places little to no emphasis on Richard Ramirez’s motivations or extremely harsh upbringing.
