COLUMNS
Between the Lines: Kicking coffee is a kick in the head to reporter
Nov. 3, 2013A few months back, I was a reformed addict.
Science with Dan: 3D printing results with new perspectives
Nov. 3, 2013As of late, I have been hearing more and more about something that sounds fascinating, yet I had no idea what it actually was. Replicating everyday objects, perhaps on a large scale, seems like something that could keep me occupied for hours on end. I am referring to 3D printing.
Green Beat: After going organic, effect will be gigantic
Nov. 2, 2013Feeding the world in a sustainable way is a challenge. Organic agriculture is often put forth as a solution to environmental ills. According to the Pesticide Action Network, “In 1940, we produced 2.3 food calories for every one fossil fuel calorie used… we now get one food calorie for every 10 fossil fuel calories used.” Using fewer petroleum-based fertilizers and pesticides, as organic agriculture would require, would clearly be a step in the right direction.
That's A Wrap: TV shows have significant impact on movie business
Nov. 2, 2013Television has definitely evolved throughout the past couple of years, and it continues to keep changing.
Beauty and the Bobcat: Celebration of newly discovered foundation turns to frustration
Oct. 30, 2013Recently I had been hearing a lot about the Maybelline Fit Me Shine-Free Foundation Stick, and I wanted to give it a try. This foundation is a revolutionary product, which Maybelline coins as “the first gel stick foundation” on their Website. It is only about $7 and also boasts an anti-shine core which promises to “instantly dissolve excess oil.”
College Matt-ers: Campaign may have good intent, but fails to achieve change
Oct. 29, 2013Awareness campaigns like Walk a Mile in Her Shoes make us feel like we are accomplishing something, but fail to address the systemic problems of privilege and oppression these campaigns try to address.
Keep You Wondering: Possible sixth sense may steer people from danger
Oct. 29, 2013Everyone is familiar with the five senses that humans have: taste, touch, scent, smell and hearing, but some researchers think that there might be another sense that people use in order to stay alive. This would be a sense that you wouldn’t exactly notice, like you notice the other five. This sixth sense would be used to spot danger that us, as humans, would want to avoid.
The PHILosopher: Responsibility abounds with own house, pet
Oct. 28, 2013Being an Animal House resident is a tough job. The house is always full of people just looking for a good time. However, the house is usually left trashed and occasional theft occurs causing us to actually start acting like animals because we are angry.
This Day in History: Halloween prank panics the public in 1938
Oct. 28, 2013Editor's Note: This column has been redacted because of significant use of unattributed information.
Though awkward, dirty talk via text worth a shot in the dark
By Ian Ording, Kristin Salaky | Oct. 28, 2013Dear BedPost,
Gamer Girl: A eulogy for classic childhood video games
Oct. 28, 2013I have an embarrassing confession: I’m a late bloomer when it comes to video games.
That's a Wrap: Netflix's potential new venture could change filmmaking
Oct. 26, 2013Netflix has revolutionized the way we watch movies and television.
Green Beat: Bees are underappreciated, under threat
Oct. 26, 2013Honeybees are essential for pollination. Unfortunately, they are also under threat.
Beauty and the Bobcat: Misuse of eye makeup overshadows expertise
Oct. 24, 2013I recently realized that I haven’t said too much about eye makeup products in my previous columns. This is because I’m terrible at eye makeup and feel like I’m not proficient enough to give any kind of advice in that regard.
Keep you wondering: Halloween doesn't have to be so haunting
Oct. 24, 2013Halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays, and I always felt somewhat bad about it because I believed it to be a time that people would worship evil demons and witches coming out to hunt our souls, but it turns out, in a sense, it’s a joyful holiday.
Gamer Girl: Violent games don't always cause people to be violent
Oct. 22, 2013Call of Duty: Black Ops sold nearly 15 million copies. Grand Theft Auto V, which was released just over a month ago, has already sold more than 16 million copies. Halo 3 sold 8.1 million.
College Matt-ers: A response to Trustee Anderson's letter
Oct. 22, 2013In her letter to The Post on Monday, Board of Trustees Chair Sandra Anderson mistakenly wrote that our Board adequately seeks student input, but conveniently her letter provides more than enough evidence to the contrary.
Guest Column: Alumni Band Fought Football Team - and the 110 Won
Oct. 22, 2013I remember where I was the first time I heard the story. I was a freshman sports reporter for The Post. Back in the mid-1990s, The Post was on the first floor of the old Baker Center on the side of the building nearest Court Street. It was within those artificially-lit green and white rooms that many great journalism careers were launched, probably along with several cases of rickets.
The PHILosopher: Columnist eagerly awaits, but phone has yet to vibrate
Oct. 21, 2013One thing that lady Bobcats do that really gets under my skin is taking the length of President McDavis’ current tenure to reply to my text messages.
