Guest Commentary: Belief in democratic OU a disillusioned thought

Two hundred and three years ' it is almost awe-inspiring to think that we are all part of a university that has been spreading knowledge for more than two centuries. I often wonder, could our founders ever have conceived the issues we face today? Could they ever fathom things like budget realignments, strategic plans or shared governance? That last one, shared governance, is probably the most pertinent, for it is the reason the other two have seemed so painful. Do we have shared governance? Do any of our opinions even matter to those in charge? For three years I have answered yes to both of these questions ' I have been a fool. We are no closer to a truly democratic university than we were 203 years ago.

Ask Jerri: Reading Vision Ohio reveals 'strategization'

About a week ago, we received word that President McDavis was going to re-re-re-unveil Vision Ohio for Founder's Day. And, as much as we both wanted to get some sleep this week, we decided to comb through Vision for ourselves in anticipation of the big day. What we found was deeply disappointing. There just isn't space in a column of this size to mention everything that's wrong with this document. What we can do is forgo our usual format and address what we believe to be the most dangerous myths about Vision Ohio.

Editorial: Founding the future

Today we celebrate Founder's Day, remembering the Ohio University personnel and students that have made OU what it is today. We look at Cutler Hall and find it nearly inconceivable that such a small building could have been OU at its birth. We hear that Margaret Boyd was the first female student, that John Newton Templeton was the first African-American male student and that Martha Jane Blackburn was the first African-American female student, and marvel that years ago such people had to fight for higher education.
