Siblings experience college life at Ohio University during Sibs Weekend with T-Pain and more

Siblings experience life on campus through ice skating, a Harry Potter movie marathon and a T-Pain Concert among other events.

For 9-year-old Brielyn, her favorite part about Sibs Weekend was getting to hold her sister Rebecca’s hand.

Rebecca Bycofski, a sophomore studying French, took Brielyn to the Athens hockey game, the UPC Carnival and ice skating at Bird Arena, but Brielyn said she was the most excited for being able to sleep in the dorms.

The “Midnight Meltdown” for Sibs Weekend was just one of the many events that allowed siblings of all ages to join in on the fun with their college-age brothers and sisters.

The event began after an Ohio hockey 6-2 victory against Illinois, and it welcomed students and siblings of all ages to skate until the clock struck midnight.

Another event planned for annual Sibs Weekend Concert hosted by the Black Student Cultural Programming Board was the T-Pain concert, which had sold out the day prior.

The annual Sibs Weekend Concert, hosted by the Black Student Cultural Programming Board, had T-Pain twerking along with the crowd with hits such as “Buy U a Drank,” “Bartender” and “All I do is Win.”

“I think there was a lot of siblings. I think that’s our biggest audience, which is helpful for the Sibs Weekend Concert,” Michaela Bateman, the cultural arts co-chair for BSCPB, said. “We hope that people bring their siblings and that they can all have a good time.”

While T-Pain was the headliner, the official DJ for the Indiana Pacers, DJ Bandcamp, opened the show.

“I loved DJ Bandcamp. He was amazing. He got it really turnt in there,” Bateman, a junior studying psychology, said. “But I think it was towards the end when T-Pain was playing ‘All I do is Win’ and ‘Bartender’ and all that. It was just really hype.”

As for Allison Matisko, a freshman studying finance, she said despite being the only programmed event she attended this weekend with her brothers, it was the “cake topper.”

“It was absolutely amazing, T-Pain is the best in the world,” Matisko said.

For her 14-year-old twin brothers, Michael and Matthew, they said the concert had greatly exceeded their expectations.

“He was really good,” Michael said. “I just can’t hear right now.”

The OU Harry Potter Alliance held a Harry Potter marathon at The Athena Cinema that screened the first four Harry Potter films.

Nearly 200 people were in attendance for each movie and the Athena had sold almost 100 all-day passes, Megan Popke, assistant manager of The Athena Cinema, said.

“I was really surprised because we had a lot of younger kids too that came,” Popke, a junior studying nursing, said.“They were dressed as Harry Potter and it was great.”

Jan McGarry, an Athens resident, had brought her daughter Addie, 9, to the marathon, which lasted nearly 12 hours and also held a costume contest and trivia breaks in between the movie screenings.

“We had fun with the trivia,” Jan said. “We were super excited about this.”

Addie, clad with a full Hogwarts uniform and wand in hand, said she really enjoyed being able to see the fourth Harry Potter movie because she had not seen all of it before.

“It was really cool to see people getting really excited about (the marathon),” Popke said. “I love seeing people get into something that they enjoy, so getting to embrace their experience and seeing, like, their happiness makes me happy.”
