Local bar scene offers range of sports choices

Some argue that Athens is not a sports town, but many would not know it with the bounty of sports bars inside the city limits. From Damon’s on East State Street to the cluster of bars Uptown, the sports fan has many choices of where to go catch his or her favorite team with a side of food and a beer. Students from across the border in Pennsylvania always can be sure to get the Steelers’ game at Lucky's Sports Tavern. Fans that hail from Cleveland will scowl at them across the street in the Cat’s Eye Saloon. “I’m a big Steelers fan and there was a need in town for a Pittsburgh Bar,” Lucky's manager Ryan Seeberg said. “We do follow some Penguins and Pirates, but it’s really based on the Steelers.” If people want to go grab dinner before the game, they can head out to Damon’s, Skippers or Buffalo Wild Wings. Or they can go share a pizza during an afternoon baseball game down at Courtside Pizza or a plate of spicy wings at Red Brick Tavern. “Our TVs are always tuned to sports,” Red Brick owner Debbie Clary said. “We get our share of fans for Monday Night Football, OU games. Whatever sports season it is, there are always people in here watching games.” Students also can go cheer on the Bobcats at Pawpurrs and travel the road to the final four in The Pigskin Bar & Grill instead of studying for those winter finals. The Post Sports Staff has provided information on these nine sports bars that have been named above because we deemed them to be the best-known sports bars in Athens. This, understandably, could be cause for debate on many sides. The goal of this Overtime is not to judge which sports bar is the best in Athens but to inform The Post’s readers about the numerous nuances and features of the Athens sports bar scene. The Post Sports Staff hopes this Overtime will help our readers find their sports bar in Athens. — The Post Sports Staff contributed to this article.
