Country music to aid poor

WASHINGTON  -Country music singer Willie Nelson plans to be on the road again doing concerts to help raise money for the presidential run of Rep. Dennis Kucinich of Ohio.

Nelson said Wednesday he was endorsing Kucinich because the Cleveland Democrat has a history of standing up for heartland Americans who are overlooked.

"A Kucinich administration will put the interests of America's family farmers, consumers and environment above the greed of industrial agribusiness," Nelson said. "I will be doing all I can to raise his profile with voters."

Eight other Democrats also are in the 2004 race, and five are close to the $5 million mark in recent fund-raising. Kucinich has said he expects his total for April to June to top $1 million.

Nelson, whose hits include "On The Road Again," is the founder and president of the Farm Aid concert, which raises money to keep families on their farms. Farm Aid will be in Columbus, Ohio, on Sept. 7 and feature Nelson, John Mellencamp, Neil Young and Dave Matthews.
