The Osteopathic Medicine Clinic in Parks Hall, which was operated by Ohio University, became a private entity Tuesday, and officials said the transition went smoothly.
Before the transition, it was unclear how many employees would transfer from the university-operated clinic to the private practice. About 88 university employees worked in the clinic in administrative, non-physician roles before it privatized. The new clinic is staffed by 25 of those workers and 40 newly hired employees, said Jack Brose, dean of the OU College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Most of the employees who were not rehired took a severance package, which entailed a one-time payment of their six-month salary. The package was given to employees who continued with the private clinic as well.
About 14 employees were not hired by the new clinic but also opted out of the severance package, Brose said. Instead of the severance package, these employees were placed in an extended employment group where they can wait for one year for a job to become available somewhere else within the university.
